Modern geology last decades turned into multidisciplinary science where different geological trends such as sedimentology, paleontology and stratigraphy, geophysics and other modern geological areas are combined and successfully interact.

Developed last years new geological fields such as seismic stratigraphy, sequence-stratigraphy, basin modeling coupled with traditional geological sciences significantly advanced our understanding of sedimentary basins’ evolution and formation of hydrocarbon systems in settings of phase and geodynamic instability of sedimentary rocks and fluids manifested in mud volcanic eruptions and shallow earthquakes.

Recent studies with application of advanced methods and techniques have provided us by a huge amount of new geological, geophysical and geochemical materials, which significantly improved our geological knowledge.

For example, new data have allowed creating a detailed geochronological scale, which is being used for correlation of geological events in time and space.

One of the major modern geological trends is sedimentology, particularly, in its industrial application based on the utilization of depositional models to prediction of natural hydrocarbon reservoirs’ architecture and construction of geological models.

Reconstruction of depositional environments together with the application of seismostratigraphic methods allow us to precisely determine chronostratigraphic boundaries, conduct detailed geological correlations as well as predict stratigraphy of deeply subsided sedimentary complexes.

The modeling of depositional systems being one of the modern research tools is successfully oriented last years on reconstruction of natural environment of HC reservoirs accumulation and diagenetic transformations. Application of modeling technique allows implementing a selective approach aimed on the assessment of hydrocarbon reservoirs of the different origin and in the various types of oil-gas accumulations. Such studies involve more and more experts in different geological fields and find more and more industrial applications.

In connection with this Azerbaijani scientists found it necessary to found a new specialized scientific journal, covering such important areas of modern geological science as the stratigraphy and sedimentology of oil and gas basins. In this connection the Branch of Earth Sciences and National Committee of geologists of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences together with the Branches of Earth Sciences of Academies of Sciences of Russia, Georgia and Ukraine proposed to found a new international scientific journal "Stratigraphy and Sedimentology of Oil-Gas Basins".

A significant part of the publications will be devoted to latest studies in the field of seismic stratigraphy, sequence-stratigraphy, basin modeling in various oil and gas basins of the world, submitted by researchers from academies and industrial geologists. The editorial board of this journal includes scientists from Bulgaria Turkey, Russia, Ukraine, Georgia and Azerbaijan. Published articles are based on the results of complex investigations and are designed for those who are interested in stratigraphy, geochronology and Earth history stored in the geological archives.
